Reductions in carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas

LPG can help to reduce harmful exhaust emissions caused by traffic and due to its low carbon content, LPG engines reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.

Although conventionally fuelled vehicles are cleaner now than in the past, it is recognised that the emission of NOx gases (principally nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide) and particulates (microscopic particules of soot laced with a cocktail of chemicals) needs to be addressed.

Although the diesel engine has been praised for helping to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, NOx gases are the main problem when new engines are being considered. Diesel engines emit high levels of these pollutants compared to modern catalyst petrol and LPG engines.

Recent tests have shown the following advantages of LPG engine emissions:



Compared with Ultra Low Sulphur Petrol-

11% to 13% less carbon dioxide
15% to 80% fewer oxides of nitrogen
20% to 40% fewer Hydrocarbons
30% to 35% less carbon monoxide

Compared with Ultra Low Sulphur diesel-

80% to 95% fewer particulates
99% to 99.8% fewer ultra fine particles
90% to 99% fewer oxides of nitrogen

LPG has the potential to reduce emissions from vehicle exhausts below those of conventional fuels. It is most important that the vehicles used with gas are properly optimised for gas use. This is the case with all vehicles supplied from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) but is not necessarily the case with every conversion.
